shal|lot shuh LOT, SHAL uht», noun.
1. a small plant much like an onion, but with a bulb composed of sections or cloves; eschalot. It belongs to the amaryllis family and to the same genus as the onion.
2. a bulb or clove of this plant. Shallots are often used for seasoning cooked foods.
[short for eschalot < Middle French eschalotte, alteration of Old French eschaloigne scallion]
